Serbia has entered the ranking list of the optical access to FTTH (Fibre to the Home) industrial organisation of the Council of Europe, which aim is to accelerate the access to the optical, ulta-fast access networks for the benefit of consumers and enterprises, as said at the conference of that organisation in Marseille.
The European FTTH ranking included all the countries having more than 200.000 households, where the ration of the subscribers having the optical access to the internet is minimum 1% of the total number of households. Two new economies have now entered the FTTH ranking: Austria and Serbia.
In Serbia there is still the cable solutions, but the access to optics is in the process of accelerated development, which can be seen from the fact that Serbia has joined the mentioned ranking. In 2014, Serbia has initiated the National Broadband Plan with the aim to promote the network of big capacity in the private sector.
The FTTH (Fibre to the Home) organisation of the Council of Europe was established in 2004 by five member founders: Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Corning, Emtelle and OFS. Today it numbers more than 150 members and does the promotion of the advantages of the optical access through the entire continent. The number of subscribers in Europe has increased by 23% in the first nine months of 2016, being almost 44.3 million.
