Ministry of Foreign and Domestic Trade and Telecommunications, in collaboration with the team of the project ‘Strengthening Consumer Protection in Serbia “, have organized a seminar on “Local Government and Consumer Protection” which was held on May 23rd and 24th in Vrnjačka Banja.
Seminar, as a continuation of the process of improving consumer protection system in Serbia was opened by Deputy Minister of Commerce, Services, Prices and Consumer Ljiljana Stankovic who emphasized the importance of local government in this area, which was recognized in the Draft consumer protection strategy for the period 2013 until 2018.
The main goal of the seminar for the representatives of municipalities and cities is to inform about the goals of consumer protection, basic rights of consumers, and the existing legal and institutional framework of consumer protection in Serbia. In presentation will be discussed and examples of active participation of local governments in the implementation of protection of the consumers of comparative practice, and at the round table on the second day of the seminar will discuss of the potential active involvement of municipalities and cities in the consumer protection system.
The response on the first day noted the interest of stakeholders in this area, such as representatives of state governments, local governments, and consumers’ associations.
