The\u00a0Deputy Prime Minister and\u00a0Minister of Foreign and Internal\u00a0Trade and\u00a0Telecommunications\u00a0Rasim\u00a0Ljaji\u0107\u00a0said\u00a0in the Assembly\u00a0of Serbia that\u00a0the negotiations\u00a0on the rate of taxation on imported\u00a0cigarettes\u00a0from\u00a0Croatia\u00a0to Serbia\u00a0are\u00a0in their\u00a0final stage.\u00a0However,\u00a0he pointed out\u00a0that\u00a0there is no final agreement\u00a0yet, nothing\u00a0has been signed, and\u00a0that the decision\u00a0must ultimately\u00a0be confirmed\u00a0by parliament.<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In an\u00a0answer to the\u00a0question\u00a0of the opposition in\u00a0the Assembly\u00a0of Serbia,\u00a0Ljaji\u0107\u00a0said that\u00a0Serbia\u00a0sent a letter\u00a0today to\u00a0the European Commission (EC)\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0it said that it accepts\u00a0the\u00a0methodology, which means, he explained, that Serbia “wants to talk”.<\/p>\n

He mentioned\u00a0that\u00a0negotiations\u00a0have been going on\u00a0since last November,\u00a0but\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0European Commission\u00a0and not\u00a0with Croatia,\u00a0adding that this\u00a0has nothing to do\u00a0with the visit\u00a0of the\u00a0Croatian President\u00a0Ivo\u00a0Josipovi\u0107\u00a0to\u00a0Serbia,\u00a0rather\u00a0that\u00a0it”has to do\u00a0with the report of\u00a0the European Commission”,\u00a0and that\u00a0there was a\u00a0“threat\u00a0that the\u00a0report will be\u00a0colored\u00a0by the fact that\u00a0no agreement was reached\u201d.<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/p>\n

He explained\u00a0that\u00a0this is not\u00a0the exception,\u00a0but the rule\u00a0that the EU\u00a0uses\u00a0when a\u00a0member\u00a0state\u00a0enters the European Union in order to\u00a0protect\u00a0it\u00a0and\u00a0allow\u00a0it to\u00a0be as\u00a0prepared\u00a0as possible\u00a0for\u00a0full membership.<\/p>\n

Ljaji\u0107\u00a0noted\u00a0that\u00a0Croatia\u00a0had to\u00a0abide by the rules\u00a0when its major\u00a0trading partners,\u00a0Romania, Bulgaria,\u00a0Hungary\u00a0and Slovakia\u00a0joined the EU.<\/p>\n

According to him, the unfavorable\u00a0position of\u00a0Serbia regarding the import of\u00a0Croatian cigarettes\u00a0comes from the agreement with Croatia\u00a0on tariffs\u00a0for\u00a0certain goods,\u00a0whichstipulates that the\u00a0tariff rate\u00a0for\u00a0imported cigarettes\u00a0is\u00a015%and\u00a0our export\u00a0to Croatia\u00a038%.<\/p>\n

This,\u00a0he\u00a0explained,\u00a0resulted in\u00a0Serbia\u00a0not\u00a0selling\u00a0a single truck,\u00a0while\u00a0Croatia\u00a0sold\u00a0as much as\u00a01600\u00a0tons\u00a0annually.<\/wbr><\/p>\n

Ljaji\u0107\u00a0added that\u00a0upon entering the\u00a0CEFTA, we acquired\u00a0the tariff rates\u00a0that were effective\u00a0on\u00a0the basis of\u00a0the\u00a0agree mentthat\u00a0the\u00a0countries\u00a0had.<\/wbr><\/p>\n

He said that\u00a0Serbia,\u00a0however,\u00a0can be expected\u00a0to\u00a0benefit from the\u00a0export\u00a0of\u00a0cigarettes\u00a0into Croatia\u00a0with a rate\u00a0of\u00a00.0%(which used to be 38%), and\u00a0Belgrade\u00a0is trying to\u00a0increase the\u00a0quota\u00a0for sugar exports to\u00a0the EU.<\/p>\n

“For the first\u00a0time we can\u00a0expect to have\u00a0increased\u00a0quota.\u00a0Itis not easy,\u00a0I\u00a0am not saying\u00a0that we will succeed,\u00a0but there is optimism”,<\/a>\u00a0said\u00a0the\u00a0Deputy\u00a0Minister\u00a0Rasim\u00a0Ljaji\u0107.<\/wbr><\/p>\n
